Malaysia’s location in the heart of Southeast Asia bordering Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei and its proximity with Singapore and the Philippines, Malaysia has been a significant player as an “Honor Student” among
ASEAN countries.

Malaysia has been internationally renowned for rich natural resources and agriculture and as exporters
of rubber, tin mining, and natural gas drilling industries since the colonial period. Economic development
brought about Malaysia’s industrialization, and during its course, Malaysia set its goal to become a member of advanced countries in 2020. The goal is called “Wawasan.” In the Malay language it means “vision.”

Largely influenced by English Common Law, Malaysia adopted a federal system and the Constitution of
Malaysia sets out the legal framework and rights of Malaysian citizens as the supreme law of the land.
Also Islamic law plays a strong role in defining the laws which only apply to Muslims in some areas of the
country. In recent years, Malaysia has been seeking to develop its system and to become a hub of a neutral,
efficient, and a reliable provider of dispute resolution services in ASEAN countries, which is known as
the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration.
