Profile and Expertise
Yiyang graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Law (Honours). He is admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and is a Senior Associate of the firm.
Prior to joining the firm, Yiyang had stints with a major local law firm and an international law firm where he advised and represented clients in a broad range of contentious matters.
Yiyang’s areas of practice mainly include litigation and arbitration with a specific focus on the maritime, construction and commodity disputes. He has advised and represented clients in numerous vessel mortgage enforcement actions and insolvency and restructuring matters in the Singapore Courts.
Litigation & Dispute Resolution
・Assisted and acted for Holcim (Singapore) Pte Ltd, a ready-mixed concrete manufacturer, in an appeal to the Singapore Court of Appeal against its contractor, Precise Development Pte Ltd. Holcim had on appeal successfully argued that it was not liable for not supplying concrete to its contractor because the contracts of supply of such concrete were frustrated and/or a force majeure event had occurred due to a sand ban which the Indonesian government had imposed.
International & Domestic Arbitration
・Assisting and acting for a Singaporean incorporated coal trader in two SCMA arbitrations against a Chinese incorporated coal supplier in respect of disputes worth US$1 million arising from two contracts for the sale and purchase of Indonesian steam coal.
・Assisting and acting for a construction company incorporated in the United Arab Emirates against the construction arm of an international engineering conglomerate based in South Korea in an SIAC arbitration involving disputes arising in a sub-contract for works to be carried out on a major construction project in Dubai worth US$6.39 million.
Insolvency & Debt Recovery
・Assisted and acted for creditors who were owed US$14 million by Swiber Offshore Construction Pte Ltd and Swiber Holdings Limited in restructuring and judicial management proceedings that were commenced by the Swiber entities.
・Successfully assisted and advised Hanjin Shipping Pte Ltd in obtaining an interim moratorium against all actions commenced in the Singapore Courts as part of proceedings commenced by Hanjin for insolvency restructuring.
・Successfully assisted and acted for DBS Bank Ltd in vessel mortgage enforcement proceedings commenced in the Singapore High Court to recover S$6.5 million that was due under a loan agreement.
